■Abalone shell nacre extract■

Recently, the number of people suffering from cataracts and glaucoma has been increasing. The nacre of abalone shells has been used empirically as a countermeasure against these conditions. In Japanese traditional medicine Wakan, the nacre of abalone shells is called Sekiketumei(石決明).

Cataract is a condition caused by the degeneration of crystalline proteins in the lens, which prevents light from penetrating the retina, resulting in vision loss.

It generally begins to appear in the late 40s, with more than 60% of people in their 60s and 95% of people in their 80s affected. Even in advanced stages, vision can be regained by replacing the cloudy lens with an artificial lens.

Glaucoma is a condition in which increased intraocular pressure and other factors cause damage to the optic nerve, and as the condition progresses, the visual field loss increases, eventually leading to blindness.

Although the incidence of glaucoma is lower than that of cataract, the number of patients is increasing every year. It is currently the leading cause of blindness in Japan.

The trouble is that most Japanese glaucoma patients have low intraocular pressure (IOP) glaucoma, for which no breakthrough treatment has yet been established. In any case, it is necessary to reduce intraocular pressure.

It is also possible to simply crush the shells themselves for use, but this is difficult for long-term use as they often contain large amounts of heavy metals and the amount required per batch is 5-15g. However, we have developed a special extraction method.

■Eclipta prostrata and Polygonatum falcatum mixed extract■

More men and women are suffering from hair loss these days. Ointments and oral medications are used, but there are concerns about side effects. In this respect, the botanical herbal medicines used in Wakan (Japanese traditional medicine) can be used safely over the long term. One such example is eclipta prostrata and polygonatum falcatumfalse daisy and solomon’s seal. Of course,

The population suffering from thinning hair and hair loss in Japan is estimated to be as high as 42 million. Ageing, stress and hormonal imbalances are cited as causes, but the male hormone DHT(dihydrotestosterone) is also suspected to be involved.

In addition, if blood flow to the scalp is inadequate or nutritional deficiencies persist for a long time, the oxygen and nutrients necessary for hair production are not sufficiently distributed to the hair root cells. At the same time, it becomes difficult for waste products to be discharged. This causes a decrease in the metabolism of the hair root cells and accelerates hair loss.

Furthermore, when lipids secreted by the sebaceous glands are oxidised, lipid peroxide with high oxidising power is generated.

If the scalp is constitutionally oily, the oxidation of hair root cells is more likely to progress. This results in oxidative degeneration, which can interfere with hair growth and nurturing.

In addition, if the scalp is dry, the hair root cells degenerate. Furthermore, lack of moisture lowers immunity and metabolism, making the scalp more vulnerable to damage.

Sunflower black seed rind and hawthorn have been used empirically to combat these symptoms.

Tinnitus is essentially a symptom associated with hearing loss. The most common disease associated with tinnitus is sensorineural hearing loss. Diseases causing sensorineural hearing loss include senile hearing loss, sudden hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss and Meniere’s disease.

The causes are thought to include inadequate blood flow in the inner ear due to ageing or stress, oxidation and inflammatory oedema due to infection.
